Georgia Farm Bureau Brings Ag in the Classroom to Pre-K

Bleckley Pre-K would like to say a HUGE thank you to Bleckley County Farm Bureau. They donated two raised beds to Pre-K. We appreciate Mr. Michael Porter delivering them and setting them up for us. Mrs. Sims, Mrs. Money, & Mrs. Goss’ class went out and added the soil to the beds. We are preparing the beds so that we will be able to plant after Thanksgiving holidays. We are very excited about this new experience here at Pre-K. We want to create an awareness of where our food comes from. Yes, you can go to the grocery store and buy it, but the question we want the students to answer is “Where did it come from before?” Through collaboration with Mrs. Lauren Goble from Farm Bureau and Mr. Michael Porter of Bleckley County Farm Bureau this opportunity was made possible. We are planning on having a Farm Day in early March. Ag in the Classroom is much more than being in the classroom reading stories about a farm or looking at pictures. To get the real experience, you must get your hands dirty!

MGSU Nursing Students Present STRANGER DANGER at BCLC

Middle Georgia State University Nursing Students, Catherine Sanders, Vivian Bryant, and Victoria Turnell visited Pre-K classrooms and presented their project on STRANGER DANGER. It is important for young children to learn to personal safety tips that will prevent them from getting into a dangerous situation with a stranger or acquaintance with harmful intentions.  Some of the safety tips Ms. Sanders, Ms. Bryant and Ms. Turnell presented were: never get in the car with a stranger; don’t accept gifts or treats from strangers; never go anywhere with someone you don’t know; always stay where your parents can see you; don’t invite strangers into your home; don’t answer the door if your parents are not home; if someone makes you feel unsafe, tell your parents immediately; yell HELP if a stranger tries to convince you to go with them or do something you don’t want to do; and don’t be afraid to tell a stranger NO.  The nursing students also taught students that there are good strangers such as doctors, nurses, bus drivers, teachers, firefighters, police officers, etc. Bleckley Pre-K appreciates Ms. Sanders, Ms. Bryant and Ms. Turnell helping teach students ways to stay safe and encourages all parents to reinforce stranger danger tips at home.

Georgia Parent Survey

The Georgia Parent Survey is also modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphone or tablet. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, school administrators should consider scheduling dates and times to allow parents to complete the Georgia Parent Survey at school. All parents should be encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online. The Georgia Parent Survey link is posted below.

Cochran PD Teaches “Trick or Treat Safely…Go Where You Know” at Bleckley Pre-K

Officers from the Cochran Police Department visited Pre-K October 30 to teach students about staying safe as they Trick-or-Treat on Halloween.  Lt. Williams, Sgt. Hill, Capt. Trawick and Officer Allen went into Pre-K classrooms and talked with students about Halloween safety tips.  Some of the important safety tips covered were:  go Trick-or-Treating with an adult; visit only the homes of people that you know; choose a costume that lets you see and hear well so you can watch and listen for cars; make sure your costume fits properly so you don’t trip; wear brightly colored clothing and put “glow in the dark” patches or strips on your costume so drivers can see you; and do not eat treats until your parent or a trusted adult checks them.  After talking with the students, the officers gave teachers reflective Trick-or-Treating bags with the safety tips printed on the back for all of the students. Bleckley Pre-K extends a special thank you to Chief Chris Coley and the Cochran Police Department for collaborating with them to help teach students how to have a fun and safe Halloween.

Bleckley Pre-K Celebrates Fire Prevention Week 2017

Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored Fire Prevention Week. The 2017 Fire Prevention Week is October 8 - 14, and the theme is "Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!"

In celebration of this week, Firemen Kyle Dykes, Jonathan Leatherwood, and David Sumner of the Cochran Fire Department visited Bleckley Pre-K and provided students with important fire safety information.  Students had the opportunity to see the fire truck up close, see a demonstration of how the equipment is used, see the firemen in their firefighting uniforms, and learn fire safety tips to keep them safe in the event they are the victim of a home or school fire.

Bleckley Pre-K appreciates the Cochran Fire Department and Firemen Dykes, Leatherwood and Sumner for partnering with them to help students learn the importance of smoke detectors, fire safety habits, getting out as quickly as possible, and staying out of a burning building.

Bleckley Pre-K Celebrates GA Pre-K Week

During the week of Oct. 2-6, hundreds of state and local leaders celebrated the 25th birthday of Georgia’s Pre-K Program by reading to Georgia’s youngest learners.  Governor Zell Miller launched Georgia’s lottery-funded Pre-K program in 1992 as a pilot program serving 750 four-year-old children. Since then, Georgia’s Pre-K Program has laid a solid foundation for academic excellence and future success in the lives of approximately 1.6 million children.

Now in its seventh year, Georgia Pre-K Week is coordinated by Voices for Georgia’s Children, a policy and advocacy non-profit organization. The goal of Pre-K week is to emphasize the importance of quality early childhood education by providing opportunities for leaders to engage with Pre-K classrooms in local communities. Georgia Power and Synovus sponsored Georgia Pre-K Week for the fourth consecutive year. Additional key supporters include Governor Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal, state commissioners, state and local elected officials and other dignitaries.

kBCHS Student Selected for 2017 Washington Youth Tour

Once a year, Ocmulgee EMC sends high school students from their service region to represent the co-op on the prestigious Washington Youth Tour.
The trip brings together 1,500 ambitious high school students from across our nation for an incredible week in the nation's capital to develop their leadership and team building skills further.
The Washington Youth Tour (WYT) is sponsored nationally by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) and statewide by the Georgia Electric Membership Corporation (GEMC).
As Georgia’s oldest leadership program for teens, the Washington Youth Tour teaches high school students about U.S. history, government and the importance of public service. The tour was inspired by former president Lyndon B. Johnson who, in 1957, encouraged electric cooperatives to send young people to the nation’s capital where they could actually see what the flag represents.
Bleckley County High School is proud to announce that OEMC has selected JoAnna Winborn as the Bleckley representative for the 2017 Washington Youth Tour! JoAnna is a senior at BCHS and is the daughter of Lorane Coffman and Frank Winborn of Cochran. She will attend the WYT June 8-15th. She will be furthering her education at The Citadel in Charleston, SC in August. Congratulations JoAnna!
